Fort 53a "Winnica"
Fort 53a Winnica is a small armored fort built into a limestone hill on the outskirts of Kraków. Constructed in 1898 and 1899, it features two gun towers with 8-centimeter cannons, underground tunnels, a courtyard with two-story barracks, and rotating observation towers on the roof.
The fort was built between 1898 and 1899 as the last of the small armored forts in the Kraków fortress system. During World War I it was armed with two 8-centimeter guns and machine guns, housing about 100 soldiers, while during World War II it briefly served as a Soviet prisoner of war camp.
The name Winnica comes from vineyards that once covered this hill. The fort reflects how the city's residents prepared to defend their territory during times of conflict.
The fort can only be visited with a guided tour organized by the Museum of Kraków Fortress. Check the museum's Facebook page for available tour dates and schedules.
The hill takes its name from vineyards that once covered it and shaped the region's identity. Today parts of the underground tunnels are flooded, making exploration without special equipment impossible.
