Five Polish Ponds Valley, Glacial valley in Tatra County, Poland
Five Polish Ponds Valley holds five glacial lakes set among granite summits in the High Tatras. The lakes form a chain across different levels, enclosed by steep rock walls.
The Nowobilski family owned this land from the 17th century until it became part of the national park. The first shelter was built near one of the lakes in the late 1800s.
The waterfalls here carry the name of Adam Mickiewicz, whose writings about mountains remain part of Polish memory. Hikers still follow the same routes that generations of climbers walked before.
Access starts from Palenica Białczańska, where a marked trail leads into the valley. The route demands good fitness and sturdy footwear, as it crosses rocky sections.
The shelter here sits higher than any other in Poland and overlooks all five lakes. Many hikers arrive at sunrise, when light colors the granite walls.
