Orthodox church of the Annunciation in Supraśl, Eastern Orthodox religious site in Supraśl, Poland.
The Orthodox Church of the Annunciation is a 16th-century religious building built in Belarusian Gothic style within the Supraśl monastery complex in northeastern Poland. Its interior contains restored wall paintings that reveal centuries of spiritual practice and artistic tradition.
Construction began in 1503 under the patronage of two local nobles and was completed with the church's consecration in 1516. The site developed into a major religious and educational center for centuries, serving the Eastern Orthodox community across a wide area.
The monastery operated a printing house that produced books in multiple languages, playing a significant role in spreading knowledge across the region. This work helped connect different religious and cultural communities during medieval times.
The site includes accommodations, an icon museum, and a museum dedicated to traditional crafts from the region. Plan your visit during warmer months when all buildings are easily accessible and the grounds are in their best condition.
The original structure was destroyed during World War II in 1944, but was fully rebuilt and restored over the following decades. The fresco restoration completed in 2021 revealed centuries-old wall paintings that had been hidden from view since the destruction.
