Muzeum Ikon w Supraślu, Orthodox icon museum in Supraśl, Poland.
The Museum of Icons in Suprasl is an art museum housed in a former Orthodox monastery in northeastern Poland, displaying hundreds of icons, religious paintings, and sacred objects from several centuries. The collection covers works from the Belarusian, Ukrainian, and Russian Orthodox traditions, arranged across multiple rooms in the historic monastery building.
The monastery at Suprasl was founded at the start of the 16th century and became one of the main Orthodox centers in the region over the following decades. After centuries of religious use and a period of abandonment, parts of the complex were converted into exhibition spaces and the museum opened in 2006.
Icons in the Orthodox tradition are not simply paintings but objects used in prayer, and the museum presents them in that context. Visitors can notice the gold backgrounds, the formal postures of the figures, and the way each image follows strict visual rules passed down over generations.
The museum sits inside the monastery complex in the center of Suprasl, within easy walking distance from the town's main street. Guided tours are available and are a good way to understand the works even without prior knowledge of Orthodox art.
Part of the collection is made up of icons seized by Polish customs officers at the border during smuggling attempts. These objects were heading toward private buyers and would likely never have been seen by the public otherwise.
