Supraśl Orthodox Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Supraśl, Poland
The Monastery of the Annunciation of the Mother of God is an Orthodox monastery in Supraśl constructed primarily from red brick. The complex features the Church of the Annunciation, the Archimandrite Palace, and several auxiliary buildings arranged together on the site.
The monastery was founded by Aleksander Chodkiewicz and relocated to its current location near Supraśl in 1501 after initially being established elsewhere. The complex grew over subsequent centuries to become a significant center of Orthodox Christianity in the region.
The monastery houses a collection of religious icons that reflect Eastern Orthodox artistic traditions and spirituality. The frescoes painted on the church walls tell biblical stories using the visual language distinctive to Orthodox Christianity.
The monastery welcomes visitors daily, allowing them to explore the church buildings, the museum collections, and areas beneath the main structure. Wear comfortable walking shoes as you navigate the grounds and uneven interior floors.
Inside the monastery walls are preserved Baroque paintings depicting religious scenes and teaching moments. One unusual feature is a Dance of Death representation painted directly on the interior surfaces, serving as a medieval reminder of human mortality.
