Lajes Field, Military air base in Terceira Island, Portugal
Lajes Field is a military air base on the island of Terceira in the Azores archipelago of Portugal, extending across several square kilometers on the northern coast. The runway runs parallel to the shoreline and is surrounded by hangars, command buildings, and an extensive infrastructure of roads and parking aprons.
Portuguese authorities began constructing the installation in 1934 to develop aviation in the Azores. During World War II the British Royal Air Force first used the outpost for convoy protection in the Atlantic, then the US Army took over parts of the infrastructure and expanded it heavily.
The installation takes its name from the nearby settlement of Lajes and has linked Portuguese military units with NATO partners in shared infrastructure for decades. Uniformed personnel from several nations work side by side here, evident in the multilingual signage along access roads and around the barracks.
Access to the installation is regulated and usually requires clearance or escort by authorized personnel. On clear days the exposed position offers wide views across the ocean, while fog and wind occur frequently and can affect operations.
The location roughly halfway between Europe and North America makes the base an important stopover for military long-range flights and occasionally for civilian aircraft with technical issues. Despite the remote island setting the airfield remains operational around the clock and maintains facilities for servicing and refueling different types of aircraft.
