Horta, Port municipality in Faial Island, Azores
Horta is a municipality on Faial Island in the Azores, spreading across some 173 square kilometers with thirteen parishes and many settlements scattered along its coast. The town serves as an important port with docks and facilities that welcome vessels from around the world.
The town was founded in 1467 by Flemish nobleman Josse van Huerter, who built a small chapel and laid the foundation for a settlement. From this modest beginning, it grew over centuries into a major maritime center in the Atlantic.
The harbor walls are covered with thousands of paintings made by passing sailors, showing vessels and crews that crossed the Atlantic over many decades. These artworks tell stories of people who passed through here.
The harbor is well equipped with berths and supply stations for ships crossing the Atlantic or traveling between the Azores. Visitors should keep in mind that weather can be changeable and the calmer months offer the best time for exploring.
Peter's Cafe Sport houses a collection of carvings made from whale teeth and bone by whalers from the region. These handcrafted pieces show an almost forgotten tradition of seafaring that hardly anyone practices today.
