Pantheon of the Patriarchs of Lisbon

The Pantheon of the Patriarchs occupies a former chapter house within the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora and displays stone tombs arranged in orderly rows. Each burial marker sits in chronological sequence, identifying the Cardinal-Patriarchs interred within this sacred space.

Originally a chapter house serving the monastery, the room later held military documents before its conversion in 1954. It became the official burial place for Lisbon's Cardinal-Patriarchs from that year forward.

The space honors religious leaders who shaped the Catholic life in Lisbon starting in the 18th century. Visitors see names and dates carved into stone that tell the story of each Cardinal-Patriarch.

Cardinal D. Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira, who led the church for four decades, rests among those interred here. His lengthy tenure reflected the church's deep influence across Portugal during shifting political eras.
