Escola Secundária Afonso Domingues, Secondary school in Marvila, Lisbon, Portugal.
Escola Secundária Afonso Domingues is a former school complex in Marvila with several buildings, sports facilities, and courtyards set among trees in eastern Lisbon. The campus was designed around technical education with workshops and classrooms built for hands-on learning.
The school was founded in 1884 as an industrial drawing school and relocated to its Marvila site in 1956. It closed in 2010 when plans for a new river crossing required the land where it stood.
The school served as a center for technical training, drawing students from rural backgrounds who had relocated to the city seeking practical skills. It shaped vocational education for generations through its focus on hands-on mechanical and electrical knowledge.
The site is not open to visitors as it is undergoing changes for planned infrastructure development. However, you can view the buildings and grounds from outside to see the historic architecture and layout.
Nobel Prize winner José Saramago studied mechanical metalworking here between 1935 and 1940 during his formative years. These experiences at the school helped shape his path before becoming one of Portugal's most significant writers.
