Castro de Bagunte, Archaeological site in Bagunte, Portugal.
Located on a hilltop, Castro de Bagunte extends over an area of 325 meters in length and 150 meters in width, containing extensive stone structures.
The settlement dates from the Iron Age and functioned as a fortified village with five defensive walls protecting residential areas until the Roman period.
Eight hundred houses within the complex once accommodated between two and four thousand inhabitants, revealing sophisticated urban planning of the Castro culture.
The archaeological site remains open for visits throughout the day and includes walking paths that connect different sections of the ancient settlement.
Archaeological excavations at Castro de Bagunte have uncovered both circular and rectangular building foundations, forming distinct residential blocks within the fortified perimeter.
