Estátua equestre de D. José I, Bronze equestrian statue in Praça do Comércio, Portugal
Dom José I is a bronze equestrian statue depicting King Joseph I mounted on a horse, located in Praça do Comércio in Lisbon. The stone base is decorated with four allegorical figures representing virtues.
Sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro created the monument, which was inaugurated in 1775 to mark King Joseph I's 61st birthday. The statue was cast following the 1755 earthquake, as part of Lisbon's reconstruction efforts.
The monument occupies the center of Praça do Comércio, where it embodies royal authority and remains a focal point for public gatherings. Its placement reflects the king's importance in Portuguese history.
Access to the statue is via marked pathways that are wheelchair-accessible and easy to navigate. Informational plaques nearby explain the monument's history and context.
The statue was cast at the former Fundição de Cima weapon factory, which represented a specialized craft tradition in Lisbon. This detail connects the artwork to the city's industrial heritage.
