Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha, Religious monument in Santa Maria Maior, Portugal.
Igreja da Conceicao Velha is a church in Lisbon's historic quarter known for its ornate portal sculpture. The main entrance gateway features elaborate stonework with two decorative window openings and a recessed arcade behind it.
The church was first built between 1516 and 1534 and originally served as a House of Mercy. Following the 1755 earthquake that devastated much of Lisbon, the building was significantly rebuilt and renewed in its present form.
The name refers to Mary, mother of Jesus, and shapes the religious meaning of the place for believers. The entrance facade displays carved figures representing royal figures and heavenly beings, expressing the connection between earthly and spiritual authority.
The site is located in the old quarter and is easily reached on foot from other historic sites. Since the building is an active place of worship, visitors should dress appropriately and observe quiet behavior while showing respect to those passing through.
The building stands in an unusual north-south orientation rather than the typical east-west direction, a consequence of reconstruction following the earthquake. This departure from traditional church orientation allowed the building to be rebuilt at its new location.
