Cristiano Ronaldo statue, Bronze statue in Sé, Funchal, Portugal
The Cristiano Ronaldo statue is a bronze work by sculptor Ricardo Veloza, standing in the Sé neighborhood of Funchal on the island of Madeira. It is placed near the marina, in front of the CR7 Museum, and shows the football player in a pose just before taking a free kick.
The statue was commissioned by a local football association and unveiled in December 2014 at a ceremony attended by Ronaldo himself, his mother, and his children. Shortly before the unveiling, the player was also awarded a regional medal of merit.
The statue shows Ronaldo posed as if about to take a free kick, and the base carries the inscription 'Best Player In The World' in both Portuguese and English. One part of the bronze figure has turned visibly shiny from being touched by so many visitors over the years.
The statue is easy to find in a busy area close to the water, and it is accessible on foot from the surrounding parts of the city. The CR7 Museum sits right next to it, and nearby cafes and restaurants make it a natural stop during a walk along the seafront.
On top of the CR7 Museum, which sits right beside the statue, there is a hotel with a rooftop pool overlooking the bay. Guests staying there get free access to the museum below.
