Igreja de São João das Donas

Igreja de Santa Cruz is a 12th-century monastery building featuring a single nave topped with an ornate vault decorated in blue and white tiles. The interior walls display biblical scenes in tilework, and the complex includes multiple cloisters plus a royal burial chamber with elaborate carved tombs.

The building was founded in 1131 with support from King Afonso Henriques, establishing an important religious center. Over the centuries it was expanded and enriched with new artistic elements, particularly during the Manueline period.

The monastery served as a center for learning and artistic creation for centuries. Visitors can still sense this intellectual legacy in the cloisters and the detailed decorative work throughout the building.

The building is open for visits most days, with guided tours available to explore the various sections thoroughly. It is worth taking time to view the rooms and intricate details, as there is much to appreciate.

The organ in the church contains about 4000 pipes and features unusual decorative elements that make it a remarkable musical instrument. The technical complexity of this instrument means only specially trained musicians can play it.
