Ngerulmud, Capital city in Melekeok State, Palau
Ngerulmud is a capital in Melekeok State on Babeldaob island, Palau. The government complex consists of three separate wings for legislative, executive, and judicial functions, linked by a central plaza.
The city became the capital of Palau in 2006 when it replaced Koror, following a constitutional mandate. The move of government to Babeldaob marked the start of a new era in Palauan administrative history.
The name comes from Palauan and refers to a spot where people once fermented angelfish on a hill overlooking the water. This traditional practice gives the current capital its name and recalls the connection between land and sea in local culture.
The government buildings are open during regular business hours, though access to some areas may be restricted to official appointments. Getting there usually requires a car, as public transport options from the rest of the island are limited.
The city is the least populated national capital in the world and serves mostly administrative purposes. Outside working hours, the government area feels like a quiet parkland without the usual hustle of a capital.
