Al Khor, human settlement
Al Khor is a coastal city in northeastern Qatar built around a protected bay with a long history as a fishing and trading center. The city features a working harbor with traditional boats, a modern stadium, waterfront promenades, parks, museums, and natural areas including Purple Island with its mangrove forests.
Al Khor was founded in the mid-1700s by the Al Muhannadi tribe after discovering a water source near the coast. The city grew into an important center for pearl diving and maritime trade, which shaped its economic and cultural significance in the region.
The name Al Khor comes from the Arabic word for 'bay' and reflects the importance of the protected harbor to the city's past and present. The old harbor area with its traditional wooden boats shows how fishing and sea trade have shaped daily life here for generations.
Al Khor is about 50 kilometers from Doha and can be reached by car in 40 to 50 minutes via highway or along the coastal road. The best time to explore is during the cooler months from October to April, as summer heat is intense and early morning or evening outings are preferable.
Purple Island was historically known for producing dyes from sea plants, revealing a craft tradition documented in regional artifacts. This hidden history of dye production makes the island a fascinating place to learn about ancient craft techniques and how people used marine resources.
