Șchei Gate, Classical city gate in Brașov, Romania.
The Șchei Gate is a stone and brick structure featuring three arches: a large central passage for vehicles and two smaller ones for pedestrians. It connects multiple streets at a central roundabout and contains a domed ceiling inside that visitors can see as they pass through the pedestrian passages.
The gate was built between 1827 and 1828 to manage increased traffic, replacing sections of the earlier Catherine's Gate. It was constructed during a period when the city was modernizing its defenses and opening up for greater movement.
The gate displays Latin inscriptions above the pedestrian archways that record both its construction period and a visit by Emperor Francis I of Austria in 1817.
The gate sits at a major street junction in the city center, making it easily accessible. Pedestrians can use the passages at any time to cross between the different neighborhoods it connects.
The interior of the gate features a domed ceiling that visitors can examine while passing through the pedestrian archways.
