Castle Rapsone, Medieval fort in Praid, Romania
Castle Rapsone is a medieval stone structure in Praid that incorporates a natural rock formation into its design. The fortification features thick defensive walls arranged in a rectangular layout to protect the settlement.
Pottery fragments from the 11th and 12th centuries show that people lived in this area before the fort was built around 1200. The structure became part of the region's medieval defense system.
The fort was part of a regional defense network and served the local community's everyday security needs. Today the site connects visitors to medieval settlement patterns and the traditions of surrounding villages.
Reaching the fort requires a walk of about 2.5 kilometers from the parking area, starting from the road marker on the route toward Gyergyoszentmiklos. Good footwear and planning extra time are wise, as the terrain is mountainous and the path can be steep.
The fort cleverly used an existing rock outcrop as part of its defensive structure. Excavations revealed that buildings inside the fort were constructed mainly from wood, which was attached to the stone walls.
