Palace of Culture, Cultural museum complex in Iasi, Romania
The Palace of Culture is a Gothic Revival museum complex in Iași, Romania, bringing together four national museums under one roof. The building extends across several floors and wings, with each area dedicated to a different theme and rooms filled with paintings, sculptures, documents and everyday objects.
Between 1906 and 1925, the building rose on the grounds of a medieval residence of Moldavian princes. After completion, it served as an administrative seat and courthouse before being converted into a museum after World War II.
The western wing houses a collection showing how people lived, worked and celebrated in Moldavian villages. Traditional costumes and tools from different regions give insight into the daily life of rural communities over the centuries.
The museums are open Tuesday through Saturday, with guided tours available in several languages. Comfortable shoes are recommended because visitors walk through many halls and floors and spend several hours inside the building.
The clock tower plays a song every half hour commemorating the union of the Romanian principalities in 1859. Standing in the courtyard, visitors can hear the melody while looking at the facade with its decorations and turrets.
