Armenian Church, Iași, Religious monument in central Iași, Romania.
The Armenian Church of Saint Mary in Iași is a church building with a clover-shaped floor plan topped by two towers, built from stone and brick materials. Inside, an elevated choir balcony divides the interior space and creates distinct areas for worship.
The church was originally built in 1395, as documented by a tombstone in the courtyard. It was rebuilt in 1803 following a major earthquake that damaged the original structure.
The church represents the Armenian community that formed in the city when merchants arrived during the 17th century. You can still see the Armenian inscriptions on tombstones in the courtyard, showing how the community used this space over generations.
The church is centrally located in Iași and easy to reach on foot from downtown. Religious services are held monthly, so checking the schedule ahead of time helps plan your visit.
The courtyard holds around 55 historical tombstones that tell the stories of the Armenian community across generations. An early 20th century building next door, originally an Armenian cultural institution, now serves as the parish house.
