Barnovschi Church, Orthodox church in Iași, Romania
Barnovschi Church is an Orthodox church building in Iași located on Ghica Vodă Street, distinguished by its limestone walls and central dome. The structure displays characteristic Orthodox architectural features of its period.
Prince Miron Barnovschi-Movilă initiated construction in 1627, and after his departure the executors Iancu Costin and Matei Gavrilaș oversaw its completion. The church has served the local religious community since its establishment.
The church preserves an epitaphios with Greek inscriptions depicting the Burial of Jesus, donated by the founding prince. This textile artwork was likely created by his mother and shows the artistic importance the family placed on the building.
The building underwent renovation starting in 1994 and welcomes visitors interested in its architecture and design. Appropriate dress and respectful behavior are expected since it remains an active place of worship.
Archaeological excavations in 1998 uncovered an arched brick crypt beneath the nave that may contain the remains of the founding prince. This discovery provides rare insight into burial practices of the period.
