The Endless Column, Modern art sculpture in Târgu Jiu, Romania
The Endless Column is a thirty-meter-tall monument composed of seventeen identical metal rhomboidal elements mounted vertically on a steel core. The structure stands on a travertine base and repeats a single geometric module along its entire height.
Constantin Brâncuşi created this column in 1938 as a memorial for the defenders of the town during World War I. Construction took several months and required custom-made steel parts from Bucharest.
The metal modules recall carved wooden columns found in Romanian villages, yet the material speaks a clear industrial language. Brâncuşi connected folk art with the formal vocabulary of the early twentieth century in this way.
The monument stands in an open park north of the town center and remains accessible from all sides. Lighting installations allow a good view of the construction even during evening hours.
The uppermost module appears only halfway, as if the column symbolically continues further into the sky. This deliberate incompleteness of the last unit reinforces the impression of endlessness.
