Jiu Bridge, Historic bridge in Târgu Jiu, Romania.
Jiu Bridge spans the Jiu River using three metal arches and connects the Central Park to an artificial island within the city. The structure serves as a pedestrian crossing and forms a notable point in the urban landscape.
The bridge was built in 1896 by the Paris-based engineering firm Daydé & Pillé and served as a strategic point during World War I. It survived the intense fighting of 1916 in the region and remains standing today.
The bridge sits near the monumental sculptures created by artist Constantin Brancusi and serves as a visual link between different parts of the city. Visitors walking across notice how it connects cultural and recreational zones within Târgu Jiu.
Access is on foot and the bridge connects the central area directly to green spaces and the park. Visitors should note that the structure sits at ground level and the surrounding paths are relatively flat.
Three of the original five metal arches were relocated about one kilometer north from their initial position to create a shorter river crossing. This relocation was a remarkable engineering feat that gave the bridge its current form.
