Peuce Island, Ancient island in Danube Delta, Romania
Peuce Island was an island in the Danube Delta positioned between steep riverbanks within the river's waterways. It was located in what is now Tulcea County and was shaped by the flowing channels around it.
The island was already a notable settlement in the 4th century BC when Alexander the Great attempted to conquer it but failed due to strong currents and defensive fortifications. Later, tribal groups shaped the region as they established themselves in the area.
The Germanic-Celtic Bastarnae tribe established settlements on the island and adopted the name Peucini, influencing regional demographics in the 2nd century BC.
The area is difficult to reach and requires water transport or specialized boats to explore the region properly. Visitors should be prepared for changing water conditions and the challenging delta terrain.
A major military conflict near the island in 680 led to the founding of a new empire in the region. This event reshaped the political landscape of the area permanently.
