ArcelorMittal Galați, steel mill in Galați, Romania
ArcelorMittal Galați is a steel mill in northeast Romania and the country's largest steelworks. The site spans flat terrain with six blast furnaces, multiple steel shops, and processing units that produce hundreds of thousands of tons of steel annually.
The mill was founded in the 1960s to advance industrialization in eastern Romania and quickly became the country's largest steel producer. After the political changes of 1989, it restructured and was taken over by ArcelorMittal in 2001, focusing since on specialized steel products.
The name ArcelorMittal refers to the current operator that took over in 2006. The facility remains deeply connected to local identity, shaping how many residents of Galați view themselves as part of an industrial community.
The mill operates continuously with daily activity, meaning noise, smoke, and industrial emissions are constant, particularly in early morning hours. Visitors should wear appropriate clothing as heat and metal particles are present in the air, and advance notice is required for access to the site.
The mill once employed over 40,000 workers and was the heart of Galați, producing more than half of Romania's steel. Today only blast furnace number 5 and certain specialized units operate, while decommissioned furnace number 6 has awaited demolition since a 1994 explosion.
