Караджалеана, Bronze sculpture ensemble in front of the National Theater, Romania
Караджалеана is a bronze sculpture ensemble with 16 figures located in front of the National Theater in Bucharest. The figures were created by artist Ioan Bolborea and form a large group that connects to the tradition of Romanian theater.
The monument was unveiled in 2010 and shows figures from classic theater plays of the 19th century that were very popular in Romania. The project aimed to preserve the legacy of theater and its most important works in the center of the city.
The statues show characters from Ion Luca Caragiale's plays and were modeled after famous Romanian actors of that era. Walking around them, you can notice the details of their clothing and their expressive faces that bring the theatrical world to life.
The ensemble is located at an intersection of major boulevards in central Bucharest, making it easy to reach and highly visible. The area around the sculptures is open and offers space to walk around and view the figures from different angles.
Each figure weighs about one ton and was treated with a patinated surface that develops different shades of green and brown over time. This patina gives the ensemble an aged appearance that underscores the timeless nature of the theater characters.
