Turnul Colței, Medieval bell tower in Bucharest, Romania
Turnul Colției is a 54-meter bell tower with stone foundations and brick walls topped by a baroque roof featuring four corner turrets. The structure displays elaborate carved decorations including lions and eagles on its exterior surfaces.
The tower was built between 1709 and 1714 by Swedish soldiers retreating after defeat in battle. These soldiers incorporated their military architectural knowledge into the design, leaving their mark on Bucharest's skyline.
The tower served as a spiritual landmark for the surrounding community through its bells and functioned as a visible symbol of the monastery's presence in the city. Its sounds would have marked daily rhythms and religious occasions for residents of this quarter.
The tower stands near Colțea Monastery as a prominent feature of the surrounding historic district. Visitors should explore the exterior to appreciate its full proportions and the carved details that decorate its surfaces.
The bell weighing 1700 kilograms was said to have exceptional acoustic qualities, and its sound could be heard across much of the city. This sonic character made the tower a distinctive landmark in Bucharest's soundscape.
