The statue depicts Michael the Brave mounted on horseback atop a marble pedestal adorned with heraldic symbols. Located at University Square, it rises prominently from the center of this important Bucharest landmark.
Completed in 1874 by French sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, this was the first equestrian statue erected in the Romanian capital. It commemorates a 16th-century military leader who unified Romanian territories.
The monument features bronze coats of arms on its pedestal corners, representing Wallachia, Moldova, and Transylvania. These heraldic symbols connect the site to Romania's regional identity.
The monument sits in the center of University Square and is easily accessible from multiple directions on foot. The best time to visit is during midday or afternoon when plaza activity is most lively.
Following the 1877 war, two captured Turkish cannons were placed beside the statue by order of Prince Carol I. These artillery pieces stood as symbols of military victory for years afterward.
