Cetatea Giurgiu, Medieval citadel and archaeological site in Giurgiu, Romania.

Cetatea Giurgiu is a fortified stronghold positioned on elevated ground overlooking the Danube River, featuring thick stone walls and four corner towers. The remains reveal traces of wooden reinforcements and preserve sections of its original defensive barriers.

The fortress was first recorded in 1403 during the reign of Mircea the Elder and served as a defensive position for the region. It fell to Ottoman forces under Sultan Mehmed I in 1417.

The fortress displays medieval construction methods with thick stone walls that reflect the building techniques of its era. Visitors can observe how the defensive structures were arranged and what role they played in protecting the settlement.

The site is accessible through the Port Road and visitors can explore the ruins on their own or with a guide. Guides are available to help explain the layout and defensive structures.

A Burgundian military commander named Waleran de Wavrin documented the fortress as a square castle with massive corner towers reinforced by wooden beams. This account provides one of the few detailed descriptions of how the structure originally looked.
