This geological complex spreads across approximately 95 hectares and displays basalt columns, a dormant volcano, and an emerald-colored lake contained within three separate quarries. The terrain features varied elevations where the columnar formations and the lake form the main focal points.
Basalt columns formed approximately 1.4 million years ago during an early volcanic eruption that shaped this geological landscape. Later quarrying operations created the visible stone depressions and contributed to the site's current structure.
Students and researchers visit to study volcanic formations and environmental processes that shaped this landscape. The site serves as an outdoor classroom where people learn directly from the geological features on display.
Visitors enter through a central point where a ticket is required for access to the entire site. Pathways are partly paved and partly natural terrain, so sturdy footwear is advisable, especially during wet or rainy weather.
The emerald-colored lake shifts its hue depending on light and weather conditions, creating an almost otherworldly appearance that changes with each visit. This optical effect is caused by the mineral content and reflection properties of the water.
