Lake Văcărești, Protected wetland in southern Bucharest, Romania.
Lake Văcărești is a protected wetland in southern Bucharest surrounded by concrete embankments that form a contained basin. The water features shallow zones with varying depths and is lined with reed beds and natural shorelines that support diverse aquatic ecosystems.
Construction began in 1986 as part of a flood control initiative but stopped in 1989 during the Romanian Revolution. Decades later, the abandoned site was transformed into a protected nature reserve.
The area transformed from an abandoned communist project into Romania's first urban nature park, officially recognized in 2016.
Walking trails circle the perimeter, allowing visitors to observe wildlife from multiple vantage points throughout the site. The paths are suitable for casual walking and bird watching during daylight hours.
Underground springs feed the lake and maintain stable water levels year-round. This natural water supply allows rare species, including protected otters, to thrive in this urban environment.
