Ropemakers' Tower, Medieval fortified tower in Sighisoara, Romania
This medieval fortified structure has a square base with a prismatic shape, located at the northwest corner of the Saxon citadel walls. The building shows original defensive features including blocked loopholes in its lower levels that reveal how the original fortification was designed.
Built in the 13th century, the tower was part of the Saxon fortification system that protected the city for centuries. The blocked loopholes in the basement reveal that the original defensive wall was taller than what remains today.
The name comes from the rope-makers guild that helped defend the city during medieval times. This craft was so important to daily life that the tower and other structures were named after the trades they served.
You can reach the tower by climbing the Scholars' Stairs from the Citadel Square, which leads to this area and the surrounding Saxon cemetery. The route is walkable and provides access to the Church on the Hill above.
Today the tower serves as a residence for the cemetery caretaker who maintains the surrounding churchyard. This practical reuse shows how old structures adapt to serve the community in new ways.
