Stari Grad

Stari Grad is a stone fortress perched on a steep hillside above the Đetinja River in the town of Užice. The remaining walls and structural elements show the typical layout of a medieval defensive installation with multiple protective features.

The fortress was founded in the 14th century by the Vojinović family as a key defensive stronghold in the region. It later fell under Ottoman and Austrian control before being deliberately destroyed in 1863.

The name comes from the Serbian word for "old" and refers to the settlement that once occupied this site. Visitors today see the ruins as a testament to the region's past and a place where local history becomes tangible.

The site is best reached on foot as the hilltop location requires a steep walk from the town below. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow time to explore the various sections of the ruins.

The fortress underwent restoration with international support, reflecting its importance as a cultural landmark beyond the local area. Despite its deliberate destruction generations ago, the site has attracted restoration efforts and visitor interest.
