Smederevo Fortress

Smederevo Fortress is a medieval castle on the Danube River with 25 towers and thick stone walls arranged in a triangular design. The complex spreads across several hectares and demonstrates the defensive engineering of its era.

The fortress was built between 1427 and 1430 under Despot Đurađ Branković and soon served as the seat of medieval Serbian government. It fell under Ottoman control in 1459, marking the end of an era.

The fortress displays a blend of Gothic and Romanesque features visible in its stone structures. The Donjon tower carries carved details that offer insights into medieval craftsmanship.

The fortress is open daily and walkable with mostly level ground that allows easy exploring. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since paths are rocky and sun exposure is intense on the open grounds.

The construction incorporated stones from ancient Roman settlements such as Viminacium and Margum, blending materials from different historical periods. This reuse shows how medieval builders used available resources practically.
