Smederevo

Smederevo is a city along the Danube River in Serbia, defined by a medieval fortress that spreads across a large area with thick stone walls and multiple towers. The complex follows a triangular shape and dominates the riverbank with its solid structure.

The fortress was built in the 15th century and served as a seat of Serbian rulers before the Ottoman Empire conquered it. This event marked a turning point in the region's history and brought about new political conditions.

The Smederevo Grape Festival takes place annually near the fortress, gathering thousands of visitors who celebrate the regional wine production traditions.

The city lies southeast of Belgrade and is easily reached by train or bus, making it suitable for a day trip. Visitors should allow enough time to explore the entire fortress while enjoying the river views.

The 1941 ammunition explosion in the fortress caused extensive damage to the structure and resulted in the deaths of 2,000 local residents.
