Church of the Holy Assumption in Smederevo

The Church of the Holy Assumption is a Serbian Orthodox building with a single dome and facades that combine brick and stone using different masonry methods. The interior is decorated with painted scenes depicting biblical figures and religious narratives.

The building was constructed in the first half of the 15th century as a burial chapel for a high-ranking church official. It was built on land that had served as a burial ground for a long time.

The interior paintings show religious scenes including Christ Pantocrator and biblical prophets that shaped the spiritual life of worshippers. These artworks from centuries past remain central to how people experience the sacred space today.

The church is located near the old cemetery and is easy to reach from the city center. The site is accessible and requires only a short walk from the downtown area.

The north section of the church holds the grave of a notable 19th-century Serbian journalist and a memorial ossuary. This space brings together religious and cultural history in a single location.
