Church of Saint George in Smederevo, Protected Orthodox church in Smederevo, Serbia.
The Church of Saint George is a large 19th-century Orthodox church in Smederevo with five domes and a prominent western bell tower. Its design combines three-nave basilica elements with a trikonhos layout in the sanctuary area.
Construction took place between 1850 and 1854 under architect Andrey Damyanov, who modified the original plans by architect Jan Nevola. The building emerged during a period when Smederevo was growing as a regional center for Serbian Orthodox life.
The interior iconography blends Russian and Serbian artistic traditions through works created in the 1930s. Visitors can see how Eastern European religious art merged with local Serbian practices in the decorations and compositions.
The church is open to visitors and offers free access to explore the interior and view the artistic decorations. Those visiting should allow time to appreciate the domed structure and take in the details of the iconography at a leisurely pace.
The interior frescoes include portraits of historical figures like King Aleksandar and Queen Marija woven into religious scenes. This blending of temporal rulers with sacred imagery was an unusual artistic approach in Serbian churches of that era.
