Belgrade Drama Theatre, Municipal theatre in Crveni Krst, Belgrade, Serbia
The Belgrade Drama Theatre is a theatre in central Belgrade, Serbia, with seating for around 500 spectators and a programme that mixes contemporary works with adaptations of literary classics. The stage regularly presents productions from both local and foreign authors.
The theatre opened in August 1947 as the first municipal theatre built in Belgrade after World War II. It marked a cultural fresh start for a city rebuilding itself after years of conflict.
The theatre became known in the 1950s and 1960s for staging American plays that were rarely seen elsewhere in the region. Those productions shaped what local audiences came to expect from a night at the theatre.
The building was renovated in 2003 and now offers a well-equipped performance space with comfortable seating. Its central location in Belgrade makes it easy to reach on foot or by public transport.
Between 1959 and 1975 the theatre merged with a comedy theatre and operated under the name Contemporary Theatre. After the two separated, it returned to its original name but kept many of the staging approaches developed during those years.
