Belgrade Drama Theatre, Municipal theatre in Crveni Krst, Belgrade, Serbia
The Belgrade Drama Theatre is a theatre building in the city with space for about 500 spectators and has shown contemporary works and adaptations of literary classics since its founding. The venue regularly hosts dramas and various staged works from local and foreign sources.
The theatre opened in August 1947 as the first municipal theatre built in Belgrade after World War II. It represented the city's cultural fresh start during the postwar period.
The theatre became known in the 1950s and 1960s for presenting American plays that were rarely seen elsewhere at the time. Those productions shaped local theatre culture and showed what kind of international work audiences wanted to experience.
The building underwent major renovation in 2003 and now has contemporary facilities that meet European standards. Visitors will find a comfortable and well-equipped performance space.
From 1959 to 1975 the theatre merged with a comedy theatre and operated under the name Contemporary Theatre. After separating it returned to its original name.
