Former Army Headquarters Building, Protected military monument in Savski Venac, Serbia
The Former Army Headquarters Building is a protected structure on Kneza Miloša Street, divided into two sections separated by Nemanjina Street. Both parts display neoclassical architecture with Corinthian columns on the exterior and contain spacious interior areas with decorated halls.
Construction of this military administrative center began in 1957 and was completed in 1965, designed by Serbian architect Nikola Dobrović. The building received protected status as a cultural monument in 1984.
The Warriors Hall features ornamental ceilings with medallions and sculptures depicting military figures, while the central entrance displays a sculptural composition showing Samson with a lion. These artworks shape the character of the main entrance area and convey military tradition through visual representation.
The building is located in a central city area and is not open for interior visits due to its protected status, but can be viewed from the street. The two sections are clearly separated by Nemanjina Street and both are visible from Kneza Miloša Street.
The architectural layout of the two buildings was intentionally designed to mirror the form of the Sutjeska river canyon. This subtle geographical reference makes the design particularly interesting for those who notice landscape symbolism embedded in modern architecture.
