The Railway Museum houses locomotives, railway cars, and technical equipment that document Serbian rail transport across different periods. The collection shows various types of vehicles and examples of how train technology changed over time.

The museum was founded on 1 February 1950 under the Ministry of Railways of Yugoslavia. Its first permanent display, "Through the History of Yugoslav Railways", opened on 30 April 1953. The idea dates to 1931, when Franjo Repić proposed a museum; in April 1934 a large railway exhibition at Tašmajdan marked the 50th anniversary of the Belgrade–Niš line, Serbia's first railway.

The museum shows how railways changed how people traveled and moved goods across Serbia, shaping the way locals understand this history. The items on display tell stories of connections between cities and the daily lives of those who worked with trains.
