Uvac Monastery

Uvac Monastery stands in a deep canyon carved by the Uvac River, surrounded by limestone cliffs and dense forests within a protected nature reserve. The complex consists of several stone structures built on the steep slope, including a church, living quarters, and supporting buildings.

The monastery was built in the 13th century as an endowment of the Nemanjic dynasty and remained under their patronage until its destruction in the 18th century. The site was eventually restored and reactivated after this lengthy period of abandonment.

The monastery serves as a center for Orthodox Christian worship, where a resident brotherhood conducts regular services and maintains spiritual practices. Visitors can observe the daily religious rhythm and experience the contemplative character of the community.

Access is via an unpaved road that descends steeply, requiring a reasonable level of physical fitness and sturdy footwear for the journey. Plan for adequate time and be aware that the terrain becomes challenging during wet weather conditions.

The monastery sits at the boundary between two municipalities and offers views of a cave system that extends beneath the river canyon through the karst landscape. This underground network beneath the valley floor makes the location truly distinctive.
