Zlatibor

Zlatibor is a mountain range in western Serbia with extensive pine forests, alpine meadows, and several lakes situated around 1000 meters high. The landscape features these natural elements spread across a large area with varied terrain.

The region originated as a medieval district called Rujno before transforming into a health resort destination during the 1800s. This shift attracted visitors seeking recovery and restoration in the mountain setting.

Villages throughout the area feature traditional wooden houses that shape the landscape with their distinctive appearance. Local residents make regional food specialties, including a distinctive sheep cheese from mountain herds that remains central to local identity.

The mountain region remains accessible through most of the year, though snow may occur from November to March while summer months offer moderate conditions for outdoor pursuits. Visitors should prepare for weather that changes noticeably with each season.

A rare pine variety called Pinus sylvestris var. zlatiborica grows only in this region and occurs nowhere else in the world. This botanical distinction makes the mountain important for conservation and scientific study.
