Novosibirsk

Novosibirsk is the administrative center of Western Siberia and sits on both banks of the Ob River in Russia. The city spreads over a wide area with broad avenues, residential neighborhoods, and industrial zones organized into ten administrative districts.

The settlement began in 1893 as a railway construction camp and grew rapidly into a major city. What started as Novonikolayevsk became Novosibirsk, now the third most populated city in Russia.

The opera and ballet theater houses the largest stage in the country and draws visitors to classical performances that take place throughout the year. The city maintains a lively theater culture, and locals regularly attend shows that range from traditional Russian ballet to contemporary productions.

The metro system connects key districts with two lines and thirteen stations, carrying about a quarter million passengers daily. The city is best explored on foot within individual neighborhoods, while public transport is recommended for longer distances.

The Akademgorodok neighborhood houses more than 35 research institutes and forms the largest concentration of scientific facilities in the Russian Federation. The area was created as a deliberately planned science town and continues to attract researchers from different fields.
