Orenburg, Regional capital in southern Ural Mountains, Russia
Orenburg is a regional capital near the southern foothills of the Ural Mountains, stretching along both banks of the Ural River at about 150 meters elevation. The river marks the geographic boundary between Europe and Asia.
The city was founded in 1743 under a decree by Empress Anna Ioannovna to serve as a fortress protecting Russian territory from nomadic tribes in Central Asia. Over the decades, it evolved into a trade hub with Kazakhstan and regions farther east.
Local markets carry regional wool products and crafts linked to old weaving traditions. Theaters and concert halls attract residents, while universities bring a mix of student energy and daily routines to the streets.
The main train station links several destinations via the Trans-Aral Railway and serves as a key junction for travel between Russia and Kazakhstan. Buses and shared taxis run regularly to different parts of town, making it easy to navigate.
The region has produced specialized knitwear for generations, including Orenburg shawls made from goat down using traditional weaving techniques. These shawls are woven so fine that they can pass through a ring, even though they are large enough to cover the shoulders.
