Lesozavodsk, Industrial town in Primorsky Krai, Russia
Lesozavodsk is an industrial town on the Ussuri River, located roughly 300 kilometers north of Vladivostok and about 10 kilometers from the Chinese border. The town sits along major transport routes, served by Ruzhino railway station on the Trans-Siberian Railway and positioned near the M60 Highway.
The settlement began in 1924 as a sawmill operation called Dalles, then merged with Novostroyka village in 1932 to form the current town. This merger reflected Soviet efforts to develop timber resources and establish industrial centers in the region.
The name Lesozavodsk comes from Russian and means 'Lumber Works City', reflecting how the local economy and daily life center on timber production and processing. Forestry shapes what you see around town, from the mills to the way the landscape has been managed over generations.
The town is best reached by rail via the Trans-Siberian Railway, with the M60 Highway offering an overland link. Visitors should prepare for a climate with harsh winters and brief summers that bring significant temperature swings.
The town hosted the 130th Machine Gun Artillery Division of the 5th Army, a major military installation that was later repurposed as a storage facility. This military past still shapes the layout and structures you see throughout the town.
