Ivdel, Administrative city in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia.
Ivdel is a town in Sverdlovsk Oblast situated along the Ivdel River where it meets the Lozva. The settlement spreads across a northern landscape shaped by forest and water, positioned roughly 535 kilometers from Yekaterinburg.
The settlement began in 1589 as Lozvinsky gorodok, a wooden fortress built east of the Ural Mountains. It gained its present name in 1831 and gradually became a hub for regional activity.
The region maintains connections to indigenous Mansi people of the northern Urals, preserving traditional hunting and fishing practices through generations.
The town sits in a remote location, so visiting requires advance planning and flexibility with schedules. Travelers should prepare for long, cold winters and brief summers when outdoor activities become possible.
The region experiences dramatic temperature shifts between seasons, swinging more than 80 degrees Celsius from winter to summer. This intensity shapes both the landscape and daily rhythms of life in ways few other places on Earth do.
