Koltsovo is a research settlement in Novosibirsk Oblast that spreads across an area of about 6.5 square kilometers. The State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology VECTOR and the BioTechnopark with its research facilities form the core of this place.
The settlement was founded in 1979 to house employees of the VECTOR research center and received the status of a science city in 2003. This recognition marked the growing importance of biotechnology research in the region.
The settlement is named after Soviet biologist Nikolai Koltsov and centers on biotechnology education for local youth. Schools and research facilities shape daily life here, reflecting how science defines the community.
The settlement has a business incubator offering office spaces for scientific startups and the BioTechnopark with about 114 hectares dedicated to biotechnology research. Visitors should know this is an active research hub where some areas may have restricted access.
The VECTOR center houses one of only two locations worldwide authorized to store and study smallpox virus samples. This makes this place a remarkably important site for virology research with global significance.
