Polazna, Urban settlement in Perm Krai, Russia.
Polazna is a work settlement on the eastern shore of the Kama Reservoir in Perm Krai, Russia. It sits north of Perm and faces the open water, with a mix of residential buildings and small local services along the waterfront.
Polazna was founded in 1623 as a handful of households at the mouth of the Polazna River. An iron factory built at the end of the 18th century turned it into an industrial site, until the creation of the Kama Reservoir in the Soviet era flooded much of the original settlement.
The name Polazna comes from the river at whose mouth the original settlement stood, and that connection to water still shapes life here today. The Kama Reservoir forms a constant backdrop, and locals spend much of their leisure time along its banks.
A road bridge connects Polazna to Perm, making it straightforward to travel between the two places. The waterfront area is the easiest part of the settlement to explore on foot, as most local services are concentrated there.
The remains of the old iron factory now lie beneath the surface of the Kama Reservoir, invisible from the shore. The reservoir itself was filled in the 1950s, meaning the entire original center of the settlement disappeared within living memory.
