A118 Saint Petersburg Ring Road, Ring road in Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast, Russia
The A118 Saint Petersburg Ring Road is a ring road in Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast that extends for 142 kilometers around the city. The six-lane freeway connects major highways through several interchanges.
Construction began in 1979 following the General Development Plan of Leningrad from 1965. The full completion came in 2011 after more than three decades of work.
Local drivers use the ring as a fast bypass of the city center, which noticeably reduces traffic flow through the historic districts. The Bolshoy Obukhovsky Bridge holds a particular importance because it remains the only fixed crossing of the Neva without movable sections for ships.
The ring freeway offers direct access to Pulkovo Airport and makes trips to outer districts easier without passing through the center. Along the entire route, more than a hundred bridges and overpasses cross rivers, roads, and rail lines.
The ring road integrates a flood-protection system in the Gulf of Finland that also serves as a traffic connection. This dam structure protects the city from storm surges while linking both shores of the gulf.
