Zayachy Island, Fortified island in Saint Petersburg, Russia
Zayachy Island is a fortified island in the Neva River, connected to Petrogradsky Island through the Kronverksky and Ioannovsky bridges across the Kronverksky Strait. It holds the Peter and Paul Fortress with its characteristic walls and bastions.
Peter the Great began construction of the fortress on the island in 1703, marking the founding of Saint Petersburg. It quickly became a major military and administrative center of the new capital.
The Peter and Paul Cathedral inside the fortress is the burial place of Russian rulers, including Tsar Nicholas II and his family. Visitors can see the final resting place of these important historical figures.
The island is easily reached on foot via both bridges and offers views from the fortress walls toward the river and surrounding city areas. The best vantage points are along the wall fortifications, particularly facing the palace areas and Vasilyevsky Island across the water.
Until the end of the 19th century, three canals divided the island into four sections before being filled in. This transformation fundamentally changed the physical structure and character of the place.
